Darkness was now thick over the area, and we couldn't see very much, but in the weak moonlight we found a tree whose branches seemed stable, and we carefully climbed out into it and down, finally hanging by the arms and jumping it last piece. Then we were down! But our troubles were not over, for it dawned on us that we could neither go forward nor back, as there were fallen trees on both sides. So we were trapped here in the dark. We didn't want to accept that, so we held a little consultation about which way we should try to get out. To one side we could only see darkness between the branches, but to the other we could make out the water, which glistened in the glow of the moon, so we thought that must be where we should try to get out.
