What is Kalamata?

Kalamata is a town in the southern Peloponnese, where the popular Kalamata olive originates. The Kalamata olive is one of the most famous olive varieties in the world, and it is only harvested around Kalamata in Greece. The popular olive variety is characterized by being large and fleshy and dark in colour. Kalamata olives can either be black or have brownish and purple hues. They are just as firm in the flesh as the green olives, which is otherwise atypical for black olives.

Kalamata or Kalamon?

Although many olives differ from each other in size and color, there are also many varieties that are very similar. Kalamata is often confused with the Kalamon olive, but Kalamon is often slightly smaller and more burgundy. Both Kalamata and Kalamon are very fleshy and have a mild and pleasant taste. Both types of olive also contain a world of health, and they are, among other things, both rich in antioxidants and E vitamins.
